The short answer
Take one tablet in the morning on an empty stomach, with up to 4 ounces of plain water and nothing else, and swallow it whole. Then wait at least 30 minutes before you eat, drink or take other pills. Both the Wegovy tablet and Rybelsus labels say so, because only a small fraction of each tablet is absorbed. If you miss a dose, skip it and take the next one the following day.
The pill comes with more rules than the shot, and at GLP-1 SOS the morning routine is the first thing new pill users ask about. Here is what the Wegovy tablet and Rybelsus labels say, why each rule exists, and how to make it easy. The same rules apply to Ozempic tablets.
The routine
Three rules, every day
1
Empty stomach
On waking, before food, coffee or any other pill. One tablet, swallowed whole.
2
Up to 4 ounces of water
Plain water only, about half a cup at most. No coffee, tea or juice with it.
3
Wait 30 minutes
Before food, drinks or other oral medicines. Longer waits gave more absorption.
Why the rules are so strict
Semaglutide is a peptide, a small protein, and the digestive system is built to break those down. The tablet contains an absorption enhancer called SNAC, and the labels say absorption happens mainly in the stomach. Even so, only about 1 to 2 percent gets through for Wegovy and Ozempic tablets, and 0.4 to 1 percent for Rybelsus. The level peaks about an hour after the dose, so anything else in the stomach then competes with a process that has little margin.
Lab note
The shot forgives a full stomach. The pill does not.
The labels report the studies behind each rule. The tablet with 50 milliliters of water gave higher absorption than with 240 milliliters, about a full cup, while 50 and 120 milliliters (4 ounces) performed the same. Longer waits before eating gave more absorption. In a published Novo Nordisk study, people who ate a meal 30 minutes before the tablet had limited or no measurable semaglutide in their blood.
Other pills matter too. Semaglutide slows stomach emptying, which can change how other oral medicines are absorbed: with the semaglutide tablet, levothyroxine exposure rose by 33 percent, and the labels advise closer monitoring for narrow-margin medicines. Our guide to GLP-1s with metformin, blood pressure or thyroid medicines covers the rest.

How to build the routine
- Set the bottle and a small glass by the bed. Keep tablets in their original bottle until you take one, as both labels say, to protect them from moisture. A small glass marked at half a cup removes the guesswork.
- Take it before anything else. On waking, before coffee, food, water bottles or other pills. Swallow the tablet whole with a few sips of plain water, up to 4 ounces. Do not split, crush or chew it.
- Start a 30-minute timer. Nothing by mouth until it rings: no food, drinks, gum or other medicines. Thirty minutes is the minimum; the label studies found more absorption with longer waits.
- Then take your other morning medicines. After the 30 minutes, other pills are fine unless your prescriber says otherwise. Thyroid medicine and blood thinners deserve a timing conversation.
- Move supplements to later in the day. Magnesium, iron, calcium and multivitamins do not belong in the 30-minute window; keep them for later meals. Our page on magnesium, vitamins or MiraLAX with the Wegovy pill or Rybelsus goes through each one.
- If you miss a dose, skip it. Both labels say to skip the missed dose and take the next one the following day. Do not take it later after eating, and never take two tablets in one day.
- Give the routine two weeks. Once it is automatic, most people stop thinking about it. If nausea makes mornings hard, see whether the pill is worse for nausea or constipation than the shot.

From our support desk at GLP-1 SOS
If you wrote to us tonight about this, here is what we would say.
Take your tablet exactly as the label says and let nothing else near it for at least 30 minutes. Then keep supplements for the evening. That is one reason we made GLP-1 SOS Daily Gut Relief a dinner routine: 2 capsules with dinner keep its magnesium, iron, zinc and vitamins hours away from your morning tablet, and its ginger and peppermint are there for the queasy days of a new dose.* If you prefer no product, one evening multivitamin, checked with your pharmacist, keeps the same timing.
We answer real questions from real people every day. Write to us if yours is not here.

Two kinds
Follows the rule, or breaks it
Follows the rule
- Tablet on waking, swallowed whole
- A few sips of plain water, up to 4 ounces
- A 30-minute timer before coffee or food
- Other pills after the 30 minutes
Breaks the rule
- Taking it with coffee, tea or juice
- Splitting, crushing or chewing the tablet
- A full glass of water with it
- Eating or taking pills within 30 minutes
Broke a rule once? No extra tablet. Pick up the routine tomorrow.
When to call your doctor
Call your prescriber the same day if:
- You have severe stomach pain that will not go away, sometimes spreading to your back
- You are vomiting or cannot keep liquids down
- You have upper right belly pain, fever, or yellow skin or eyes
- You take insulin or a sulfonylurea and have shakiness, sweating or confusion
- Your face, lips, tongue or throat swell, or you have trouble breathing (call 911)
- You took more than one tablet in a day (Poison Help: 1-800-222-1222)
The routine is about absorption. Pain, vomiting or an allergic reaction is about safety.

Questions people also ask
Can I drink coffee with the Wegovy pill or Rybelsus?
Not with the tablet, and not for at least 30 minutes after it. Both labels say plain water only, up to 4 ounces, then a wait of at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking anything else or taking other oral medicines. Set a timer and have your coffee when it rings; the label studies found more absorption with longer waits.
What happens if I eat too soon after taking Rybelsus?
Less semaglutide gets absorbed that day. The labels report higher absorption with longer waits, and a Novo Nordisk study found little or no measurable semaglutide when people ate a meal 30 minutes before the tablet. One early bite is not dangerous. Do not take another tablet; simply follow the routine the next morning and tell your prescriber if it happens often.
Can I take my thyroid medicine with the Wegovy pill or Rybelsus?
Ask your prescriber how to time them. Both are usually taken on an empty stomach, and the labels say other oral medicines should wait at least 30 minutes after the semaglutide tablet. Levothyroxine exposure rose by 33 percent with the semaglutide tablet in a drug interaction study, so thyroid levels need monitoring. Do not change your thyroid dose on your own.
What if I forget my Wegovy pill in the morning?
Skip that day. The Wegovy tablet and Rybelsus labels both say to skip the missed dose and take the next one the following day. Taken later, after food or coffee, little of it would be absorbed, and two tablets in one day is not allowed. If you miss doses often, a bedside routine or phone alarm usually solves it.
Can I take the Wegovy pill at night instead?
The labels say to take it in the morning on an empty stomach, after a night without food, and the absorption studies were built around that. If you work nights, ask your prescriber how to apply the rule. Foundayo (orforglipron), a different oral GLP-1, is labeled to be taken with or without food, which some people find easier.
