How long does hair loss last on a GLP-1, and does it grow back?

The short answer

For most people, yes, it grows back. GLP-1 shedding is telogen effluvium: it starts two to four months after fast weight loss, usually eases within about six months, and the follicles stay alive the whole time. New hair grows about half an inch a month, so the part fills in first and fullness returns over six to nine months. Shedding past six months, or bare patches, needs a dermatologist.

At GLP-1 SOS the first hair question is why, and we answer it in why hair falls out on a GLP-1. The second, usually a month later, is this one: how long will it go on, and will it come back? The answer has three parts, each on its own calendar.

Three calendars

Shedding, regrowth, fullness

1

Shedding: up to about six months

Starts two to four months after the weight loss speeds up and usually eases within six. Longer is called chronic.

2

Regrowth: starts during the shedding

The follicle is alive. A new hair forms under each one that falls and grows about half an inch a month.

3

Fullness: six to nine months

Short hairs show first along the part. Density returns over six to nine months; length takes longer.

Why the timeline is so long

Each hair runs its own cycle: years of growth, a few months of rest, then it lets go and the follicle starts a new one. Fast weight loss and a sudden drop in food push many follicles into rest at once. A 2019 dermatology review describes the shedding starting three to four months after the trigger, and the American Academy of Dermatology lists losing 20 pounds or more as one of those triggers.

That delay also explains why it ends. Once the loss slows and eating steadies, no new wave of follicles is pushed into rest. The resting hairs still fall, but each leaves a follicle that has started growing again. MedlinePlus, the National Library of Medicine site, says this shedding decreases over six to eight months and is usually temporary; the review calls it chronic only past six months.

Lab note

Every hair that falls is making room for the next one. The drain shows the past; the part shows the future.

Regrowth is slow because hair is slow. MedlinePlus puts healthy growth at about half an inch a month, so three months after the shedding peaks the new hairs are an inch or two long: short, fine strands along the part, nowhere near your old length. That is why fullness takes six to nine months.

The labels tie the loss to weight reduction, not to a direct action on the follicle: the Wegovy and Zepbound prescribing information both say so. In the pooled Zepbound trials, no one on Zepbound stopped treatment because of hair loss.

What to do while it grows back

  1. Write down the date the shedding started. Most people see it ease within about six months of that date.
  2. Take one photo of your part each month. Same light, same spot. Regrowth shows as short hairs standing up along the part long before the mirror says your hair is thicker.
  3. Keep protein steady so the new hairs have material. Hair is built from protein, and a crash in intake started this. Ask your prescriber or a dietitian for a daily target; how much protein to eat on a GLP-1 shows how to get there with a small appetite.
  4. Have iron, zinc and vitamin D checked if the shedding is heavy. Iron deficiency is a recognized cause of ongoing shedding, especially in women eating far less. Test before you guess at high-dose minerals.
  5. Cover the daily basics with one evening routine. Regrowth takes months, so steady beats strong. That is why we built GLP-1 SOS Daily Hair Shield: 2 capsules with dinner give iron, zinc, vitamin D3, folate, B12 and biotin for the months the new hair is growing, and its 90-Day Grow-Back Guarantee matches that window. It contains 5,000 mcg of biotin, so tell your doctor before any blood test.*
  6. Be gentle with the new growth. Short new hairs snap easily; loose styles, low heat and no bleach keep them.
  7. Ask about the pace of loss before you think about stopping. Stopping does not bring back hairs that are already resting. If your intake has collapsed, ask your prescriber about staying longer on your current dose. The full plan is in what to do about hair loss on a GLP-1.

Two paths

Normal regrowth, or a dermatologist visit

Normal regrowth

  • Began two to four months after fast weight loss
  • Thinning spread across the whole scalp
  • Easing by month four to six
  • Short new hairs along the part

See a dermatologist

  • Still heavy after six months
  • Bare patches or a widening part
  • Red, scaly or painful scalp
  • Eyebrows or eyelashes thinning too

Diffuse thinning that follows the weight loss is the normal path. Patches and pain are not.

When to call your doctor

Call your prescriber, or book a dermatologist, if:

  • Heavy shedding continues more than six months after it started
  • You see bare patches, a widening part or a receding hairline
  • Your scalp is red, scaly, itchy or painful
  • Your eyebrows or eyelashes are thinning too
  • You feel unusually tired, short of breath or dizzy, which can point to low iron
  • You take biotin and have a blood test coming up, including thyroid or heart tests

Diffuse shedding after fast weight loss is temporary. Patches, pain or shedding past six months are not.

Questions people also ask

How long does hair loss from Ozempic or Wegovy last?

For most people the heavy shedding eases within about six months of when it started. It begins two to four months after weight loss speeds up, because resting hairs stay anchored for a few months first. MedlinePlus says this shedding decreases over six to eight months. Still heavy past six months is called chronic and is worth a dermatologist visit.

Will my hair grow back after Zepbound or Mounjaro?

Usually, yes. This is telogen effluvium: the follicles stay alive and a new hair starts under each one that falls. The Zepbound label ties hair loss to weight reduction, and in its pooled trials no one on Zepbound stopped treatment because of it. The American Academy of Dermatology describes fullness returning within six to nine months.

Do I have to stop my GLP-1 for my hair to grow back?

No. The labels link hair loss to weight reduction, not to a direct effect on the follicle, and the hairs falling now were pushed into rest months ago. Stopping does not bring them back. Steadier eating, enough protein and a gentler pace of loss help more. Talk to your prescriber before changing your dose.

Can hair loss come back later on a GLP-1?

It can, with a new trigger: a dose increase that cuts your appetite sharply, another stretch of very fast loss, an illness, or low iron. Once your weight is stable on a maintenance dose and you are eating enough, there is usually no new wave. Keep the monthly part photo going so you notice early.

Why is my hair still thin even though the shedding stopped?

Because regrowth is slow. At about half an inch a month, new hair three months in is only an inch or two long. Density returns first as short hairs along the part; length takes much longer. If thinning at the crown or part remains, see a dermatologist, since weight-loss shedding can reveal pattern hair loss that was already starting.
