The short answer
Often, yes, for a while. Sleeping more in the first weeks or after a dose step usually follows eating and drinking far less, and eases as meals settle; the labels list fatigue, not sleepiness. Nine or more hours most nights for weeks, dozing off by day, or a low mood is a reason to check iron, blood sugar, mood and sleep apnea.
At GLP-1 SOS this message usually arrives late in the evening: I slept nine hours, I napped, and I could go back to bed now. Is that the medication? We already cover why a GLP-1 makes you tired and whether that tiredness is normal. This page is about the sleep itself: when it is catch-up, and when it is a signal.
Three patterns
Which kind of extra sleep is this?
1
Catch-up sleep
Longer nights in the first weeks or after a dose step, and you wake up rested.
2
Running-low sleep
Long nights, you wake up heavy and crash by mid-afternoon. Usually too little food or fluid.
3
Signal sleep
Nine-plus hours for weeks, dozing while sitting, snoring, or low mood. Worth a check.
What is actually happening
A GLP-1 is not a sedative. None of the prescribing information for Wegovy, Ozempic, Zepbound or Mounjaro lists sleepiness as a side effect. What the labels list is fatigue: 11 percent of adults on Wegovy 2.4 mg against 5 percent on placebo, and 5 to 7 percent on Zepbound against 3 percent, a term that for Zepbound includes lethargy. Many people feel it as a pull to lie down, and lying down becomes sleep.
Fuel explains most of it. When intake drops sharply, the body has less to spend and the urge to rest rises. Fluid and carbohydrate are usually cut first on a slowed stomach, which is why the sleepy stretch lands in the first weeks and after each dose step.
Lab note
Sleep that leaves you rested is repair. Sleep that leaves you heavy is a supply problem.
Some of it is real catch-up. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine and the Sleep Research Society recommend 7 or more hours a night for adults, and note that more than 9 hours regularly may be appropriate when recovering from sleep debt or illness. If you wake up rested and the extra hour fades within a few weeks, that is the reassuring version.
Extra sleep is also how common problems first show up. MedlinePlus lists sleep apnea, diabetes and an underactive thyroid among causes of daytime drowsiness, and sleeping too much as a sign of depression. Small meals can run iron and B12 down over months. And with insulin or a sulfonylurea, the labels warn of low blood sugar.
From the labels and guidelines
Three numbers worth knowing
11 in 100
adults on Wegovy 2.4 mg reported fatigue, versus 5 in 100 on placebo, per the Wegovy label
7+ hours
of sleep a night recommended for adults; more than 9 regularly fits recovery from sleep debt or illness, per AASM and SRS
About half
fewer breathing pauses per hour of sleep after a year on Zepbound in the sleep apnea trials (51 and 59 percent), per the Zepbound label

What to do
- Keep a one-week sleep log. Bedtime, wake time, naps, and how rested you feel from 1 to 10, with shot day marked. One week shows which pattern you are in.
- Hold one wake-up time. Same time every day, even after a long night, with daylight soon after. If you nap, keep it short and before mid-afternoon.
- Feed the day, not just the night. Protein at every meal, a small portion of oats, rice, potato or fruit at two meals, and fluid through the day, with broth or a pinch of salt on low-appetite days. See how much water to drink on a GLP-1.
- Cover what you no longer eat. If meat, eggs and dairy have mostly left your plate, ask for ferritin and B12 before guessing. GLP-1 SOS Daily Gut Relief includes vitamin B12, B6 and folate, which support normal energy metabolism, and iron, which supports normal oxygen transport, in 2 capsules with dinner. A basic multivitamin covers similar ground.*
- Know your low-sugar signs. On insulin or a sulfonylurea: shaking, sweating, a racing heart, sudden weakness. Check your glucose, follow your plan and tell your prescriber; the labels say those doses may need lowering.
- Say the words snoring and mood out loud. Loud snoring, pauses at night or dozing off while reading are reasons to ask for a sleep apnea test. A low mood is worth naming too. Neither is fixed by more sleep.
*GLP-1 SOS Daily Gut Relief supports regular bowel movements and digestive comfort. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.
Two kinds
Catch-up sleep, or get it checked
Usually catch-up
- Longer nights in the first weeks
- You wake up rested
- Heavier on the days after the shot
- Lifts when you eat and drink more
Get it checked
- Nine or more hours most nights for weeks
- Dozing off while sitting or driving
- Loud snoring or pauses at night
- Low mood or loss of interest
- Shaky, sweaty spells on insulin or a sulfonylurea
Rested after a long night is catch-up. Tired after a long night is a question.
When to call your doctor
Call your prescriber the same day if:
- You are confused or unusually hard to wake (call 911 if someone cannot wake you)
- You get shaking, sweating or a racing heart, especially on insulin or a sulfonylurea
- You doze off while driving
- You faint, nearly faint, or cannot keep liquids down
- Your mood is low. If you have thoughts of harming yourself, call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline)
- Sleepiness comes with severe stomach pain or yellow skin or eyes
- You sleep nine or more hours most nights for two weeks at a steady dose and still wake up tired
Rested after more sleep is catch-up. Never rested is worth a call.

From the people behind the Lab
You do not have to figure this out alone.
GLP-1 SOS is the daily companion made for life on a GLP-1. Plain answers like this one, a support team that replies to real questions from real people, and daily formulas like GLP-1 SOS Daily Gut Relief, designed around the side effects that come with the medication. The GLP-1 Lab is our free education arm: no login, no paywall, no hype. Side effects are part of the road. Suffering through them is not.
Questions people also ask
Does Ozempic or Wegovy make you sleepy?
Not directly. Semaglutide is not a sedative, and sleepiness is not listed in the Ozempic or Wegovy prescribing information. Fatigue is: 11 percent of adults on Wegovy 2.4 mg against 5 percent on placebo. Most of it comes from eating and drinking far less, and many people feel it as a pull toward an early night. It usually eases as meals settle.
Why do I need naps on Mounjaro or Zepbound?
Usually because supply dropped faster than you noticed. Fluid and carbohydrate are often the first things to go, which leaves you heavy by mid-afternoon. The Zepbound label lists fatigue, including lethargy, in 5 to 7 percent of adults against 3 percent on placebo. A small carbohydrate portion at lunch and steady fluid do more than a long late nap.
Is it normal to sleep more after a GLP-1 dose increase?
Yes, for a week or two. Each step brings back the lowest-appetite days, and the labels say most gut side effects cluster during dose escalation and ease after it. Smaller meals and less fluid often show up as longer nights. If the extra sleep is still there a month into the new dose, log it and tell your prescriber.
Will Zepbound help my sleep apnea and make me less sleepy?
It can, over months. Zepbound is FDA-approved for moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea in adults with obesity, and in the one-year trials breathing pauses per hour fell by about half. The change builds with weight loss, so keep your CPAP or other treatment until your sleep doctor says otherwise.
When is sleeping a lot on a GLP-1 a sign of something else?
When it lasts, leaves you unrefreshed, or comes with other changes: nine or more hours for weeks, dozing off while sitting, loud snoring, low mood, or shaky spells on insulin or a sulfonylurea. Ask about iron, B12, thyroid, glucose and a sleep apnea test. If you have thoughts of harming yourself, call or text 988.
