The short answer
Work in three stages. Today, eat small and plain, sip water between meals and stay upright after eating. For the next week, split protein into smaller portions, pause the highest-sulfur foods and skip fizzy drinks, gum and straws. After that, keep a short log to find what brings the burps back. Burps with pain, vomiting or lasting diarrhea need a call, not a protocol.
Rotten-egg burps are one of the most searched GLP-1 side effects, and one of the questions we answer most at GLP-1 SOS. We have already explained why sulfur burps happen on a GLP-1. This page is the practical part: what to do today, this week and after, in order.
The plan
Three stages, in order
1
Today: calm it
Small, plain, low-fat meals. Water between meals, not with them. Upright for an hour after eating.
2
This week: reset
Same daily protein in smaller portions, the highest-sulfur foods on pause, no fizz, gum or straws.
3
After: keep it away
A two-week log of food, burps and shot days shows your own triggers. Bring foods back one at a time.
What you are working against
The smell is hydrogen sulfide, a gas gut bacteria make from the sulfur in food, most of it from protein. A GLP-1 slows how fast the stomach empties, so a protein-heavy meal sits longer and ferments. Burping itself is normal: NIH puts typical belching at up to 30 times a day. On a GLP-1, it was reported by 7 percent of adults on Wegovy injection against under 1 percent on placebo, and 4 to 5 percent on Zepbound against 1 percent.
Lab note
Less protein at once, less time sitting, less air on top. That is the whole protocol.
Each step below works on one of three things: how much sulfur-rich food lands at once, how long it sits, and how much swallowed air rides on top. The NIH digestive diseases institute lists gum, hard candy, fizzy drinks, straws and talking while eating among the habits that add swallowed air.

What to do, stage by stage
- Today: shrink the next meal and keep it plain. Half your usual portion, low in fat, with the protein in small pieces: fish, tofu, a small serving of Greek yogurt, rice, potatoes or cooked vegetables outside the cabbage family. GLP-1 experts recommend smaller, low-fat, easy-to-digest meals, so leave rich and fried food for later.
- Today: drink between meals and cut the swallowed air. Small sips through the day, not large drinks with food. No fizzy drinks, including sparkling water, and no gum, hard candy or straws. Eat sitting down, slowly, without talking through bites.
- Today: stay upright and walk. Sit or stand for at least an hour after eating, and take a slow ten-minute walk after dinner. Expert guidance for GLP-1 gut effects advises against lying down after a meal.
- This week: same protein, smaller portions. Spread your daily protein over four or five small meals. Treat a protein shake as a meal and sip it slowly. Pause eggs, red meat, whey, garlic, onion and the cabbage family for a few days.
- Every evening: keep one calm routine. A small dinner three hours before bed, then ginger or peppermint tea. Both have a long history with a slow, queasy stomach, which is why we put 200 mg of ginger root, 50 mg of peppermint and a 19-strain probiotic blend in GLP-1 SOS Daily Gut Relief, 2 capsules with dinner. A cup of ginger tea after dinner does part of the same job.*
- For a bad day: ask your pharmacist about bismuth. Bismuth subsalicylate (Pepto-Bismol) binds hydrogen sulfide, and its label lists belching among its uses. Stop and call if symptoms last more than two days. It contains salicylate: skip it if you are allergic to aspirin, and ask first if you take a blood thinner or diabetes medicine. It can harmlessly darken the tongue and stool.
- After: log two weeks and bring foods back one at a time. Write down meals, burp days and shot days. Look for patterns, such as a large protein meal on the two days after the shot, and bring foods back one at a time. If burps return with every dose increase, ask your prescriber about staying longer on the current dose.

Two kinds
A smell, or a same-day call
Usually just a smell
- Burps after protein-heavy meals
- Worse two or three days after the shot
- Back for a week or two after a dose increase
- Easing within days of the reset
Call the same day
- Burps with belly pain
- Vomiting, or you cannot keep liquids down
- Diarrhea for more than two days, or fever
- A swollen, hard belly
Burps are a smell. Burps with pain are a call.
When to call your doctor
Call your prescriber the same day if:
- The burps come with belly pain, or severe pain that spreads to your back
- You are vomiting or cannot keep liquids down
- You have diarrhea for more than two days, or a fever
- Your belly stays swollen and hard
- You feel faint when you stand
The plan is for a smell. Pain, vomiting or dehydration need a person, not a protocol.

Questions people also ask
How do I get rid of sulfur burps fast on Ozempic or Wegovy?
Start with the next meal: half size, plain and low in fat. Sip water between meals rather than with them, stay upright for an hour afterward, and skip fizzy drinks, gum and straws. For a bad day, ask your pharmacist whether bismuth subsalicylate is right for you; it binds the sulfur gas. Give the reset a few days before judging it.
Does Pepto-Bismol help sulfur burps on Mounjaro or Zepbound?
It may. Bismuth subsalicylate binds hydrogen sulfide, and a 1998 study found it cut the gas released from stool by more than 95 percent, though it measured stool, not burps. Its label lists belching among its uses, for up to two days. Skip it if you are allergic to aspirin, and ask a pharmacist first if you take a blood thinner.
How long does it take for sulfur burps to stop on a GLP-1?
Give the reset a few days. Burps often return for a week or two after each dose increase, because gut reactions on these medicines are most common during escalation, then settle. If they persist for weeks at a stable dose despite smaller portions and no fizz, bring a two-week log of food and burps to your prescriber.
Should I stop eating eggs and protein shakes to stop sulfur burps?
Pause them, do not drop protein. Eggs and whey are rich in sulfur amino acids, so set them aside for a few days and get the same protein from fish, tofu or small servings of Greek yogurt. Bring eggs back one at a time in smaller portions. Treat a shake as a meal and sip it slowly.
Why do I get sulfur burps with diarrhea on a GLP-1?
Often the same slow, fermenting meal is behind both, and the reset above helps with each. Diarrhea that lasts more than two days, comes with vomiting or fever, or leaves you dizzy needs a call. We cover this combination in sulfur burps with diarrhea or vomiting, and plain gas in gas and burping on a GLP-1.
