Definition
Gastric emptying is how fast food leaves your stomach for the small intestine. GLP-1 medicines slow it down. A slower stomach adds to fullness, and to nausea, burping and reflux.
Normally the stomach muscles grind food and push it into the small intestine a little at a time. Every GLP-1 label says the drug delays gastric emptying. The Zepbound label adds that the delay is largest after the first dose and shrinks over time. A 2024 review of studies found that the time for the stomach to empty half a solid meal was about 36 minutes longer on GLP-1 medicines than on placebo (about 138 vs 95 minutes).
This matters in three ways. Food sitting longer means early fullness, nausea, burping and heartburn. A slower stomach can change how other pills are absorbed, which is why the labels flag oral medicines and the Zepbound label adds birth control advice. And the labels report rare cases of food being inhaled into the lungs during anesthesia, so tell your care team about your GLP-1 before any surgery or procedure. A slow stomach on a GLP-1 is not the same as the disease gastroparesis.
At GLP-1 SOS we built GLP-1 SOS Daily Gut Relief around this slower gut: ginger, peppermint, a 19-strain probiotic blend and digestive enzymes to support digestive comfort, taken as 2 capsules with dinner.*
