Telogen effluvium: what it means on a GLP-1

Definition

Telogen effluvium is temporary, excessive hair shedding that starts a few months after a stressor like major weight loss, surgery, illness or childbirth. Hair usually regains its fullness within 6 to 9 months once the body readjusts.

Shedding 50 to 100 hairs a day is normal. Telogen effluvium is when the body sheds significantly more. The American Academy of Dermatology lists losing 20 pounds or more as a common trigger, along with surgery, high fever, illness and childbirth. Most people notice it a few months after the event. It is different from hair loss where something stops hair from growing; with shedding, the hair grows back as the body readjusts. If the stressor continues, shedding can last longer.

The GLP-1 labels link hair loss to weight reduction. In the Wegovy label, 3.3% of adults on 2.4 mg reported hair loss vs 1% on placebo, and women more than men. In the Zepbound label, 7.1% of women reported it vs 1.3% on placebo, and in the Foundayo label 7% of women vs 3%. If shedding is heavy, patchy or lasts beyond several months, a dermatologist or your prescriber can look for other causes.

At GLP-1 SOS we made GLP-1 SOS Daily Hair Shield for this stage: iron bisglycinate, zinc, vitamin D3, folate, B12 and biotin, 2 capsules with dinner, designed to support healthy hair during weight loss.* Tell your doctor you take biotin before any blood test.
