Can I take Dramamine, Pepto or Bonine for GLP-1 nausea?

The short answer

Sometimes, with care. No GLP-1 label lists dimenhydrinate (Dramamine), meclizine (Bonine, Dramamine Less Drowsy) or bismuth subsalicylate (Pepto-Bismol) as an interaction. But Dramamine and Bonine are motion-sickness medicines that cause drowsiness and are usually not advised after 65, and Pepto contains a salicylate, the aspirin family, so skip it with an aspirin allergy or a blood thinner unless your doctor agrees. For nausea that keeps coming back, ask your prescriber.

At GLP-1 SOS this question usually arrives the night after a dose increase, from someone standing in front of the pharmacy shelf. The three boxes people reach for work in different ways, and none was made for medication nausea. If your prescriber has already offered a prescription option, see whether you can take Zofran with a GLP-1.

At a glance

Three boxes, three different jobs

1

Dramamine (dimenhydrinate)

An antihistamine for motion sickness. Works on the balance system, causes drowsiness, and is usually not advised for adults over 65.

2

Bonine (meclizine)

Also for motion sickness, once a day, best taken before symptoms. Sold as Dramamine Less Drowsy too. Same caution after 65.

3

Pepto-Bismol (bismuth subsalicylate)

For upset stomach, heartburn and diarrhea. A salicylate, related to aspirin, with real cautions for some people.

What is actually happening

GLP-1 nausea starts in the stomach and the brain. The medication slows how fast the stomach empties and acts on appetite centers, so food sits longer and fullness turns into queasiness, most often in the first days after a shot or a dose step. In the trials, 44 percent of adults on Wegovy 2.4 mg had nausea against 16 percent on placebo, and 25 to 29 percent on Zepbound against 8 percent. The labels say most of it happened during dose escalation and eased afterward.

Dramamine and Bonine were designed for a different cause. MedlinePlus describes dimenhydrinate as an antihistamine that works on body balance, and lists both as motion-sickness medicines; it says meclizine works best taken before symptoms start. They may take the edge off some queasy days, but there are no trials of them for GLP-1 nausea. Their main costs are drowsiness and dry mouth, and MedlinePlus says adults over 65 should not usually take either.

Lab note

A motion-sickness pill works on the inner ear. GLP-1 nausea mostly comes from a full, slow stomach.

Pepto-Bismol is labeled for upset stomach, heartburn and diarrhea, so it fits the GLP-1 picture better. Its catch is the salicylate. MedlinePlus says to ask a doctor first if you are allergic to aspirin, take a blood thinner or a daily aspirin, take medicine for diabetes, arthritis or gout, or have had an ulcer, a bleeding problem or kidney disease. No GLP-1 label lists any of the three as an interaction, but the labels note that a slower stomach can change how other pills are absorbed.

Three numbers worth knowing

44 in 100

adults on Wegovy 2.4 mg reported nausea, against 16 in 100 on placebo, per the Wegovy label

65+

the age after which MedlinePlus says adults should not usually take dimenhydrinate or meclizine

48 hours

if diarrhea lasts longer than this on Pepto-Bismol, MedlinePlus says to stop it and call your doctor

What to do

  1. Try the meal fixes first. Smaller, low-fat meals, eating slowly and stopping at satisfied cut GLP-1 nausea more reliably than any box. Our guide to what to eat when nauseous on a GLP-1 has the plates that sit best.
  2. Pick the box that matches the problem. Queasy with heartburn or loose stools: bismuth subsalicylate fits better. Queasy with dizziness or worse when moving: meclizine or dimenhydrinate. Read the active ingredient, because the Dramamine name is on both.
  3. Follow the package exactly and plan for drowsiness. MedlinePlus says to take no more and no more often than the package directs. Dimenhydrinate and meclizine can make you sleepy, so skip driving and alcohol until you know how they affect you.
  4. On the Wegovy pill or Rybelsus, keep the 30-minute rule. Take the GLP-1 tablet first with up to 4 ounces of water, then wait at least 30 minutes before food, drinks or any other pill, including these.
  5. Stop Pepto and call if your ears ring. MedlinePlus lists ringing or buzzing in the ears as a reason to stop bismuth subsalicylate and call your doctor right away. Also stop and call if diarrhea lasts longer than 48 hours.
  6. Count the days you reach for one. Once or twice after a dose step is common. Most days, weeks into a steady dose, is a prescriber conversation about the dose plan or a prescription anti-nausea medicine.

If you wrote to us tonight about this, here is what we would say.

A box from the pharmacy can be fine for an occasional bad evening if you are under 65 and none of the cautions apply, but read the active ingredient and keep to the directions. If you are vomiting or cannot keep fluids down, skip the shelf and call your prescriber. For the ordinary evenings in between, we built GLP-1 SOS Daily Gut Relief: 200 mg of ginger and 50 mg of peppermint for digestive comfort and 250 mg of magnesium to support regular bowel movements, in 2 capsules with dinner. To be honest about the evidence, the NIH says ginger research is strongest for pregnancy nausea and mixed elsewhere. A cup of ginger tea after dinner is the brand-free version.*

We answer real questions from real people every day. Write to us if yours is not here.

Two kinds

Fine to try, or ask first

Usually fine to try

  • Under 65 with no glaucoma, enlarged prostate or asthma
  • An occasional queasy evening, not daily
  • Following the box directions exactly
  • No driving until you know how drowsy you get
  • Pepto with no aspirin allergy or blood thinner

Ask your doctor first

  • Age 65 or older (Dramamine, Bonine)
  • Glaucoma, enlarged prostate or asthma
  • Aspirin allergy, a blood thinner or daily aspirin (Pepto)
  • Gout, diabetes medicine, ulcer or kidney disease (Pepto)
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding

If you need any of these most days, the dose plan is the thing to discuss, not a stronger box.

When to call your doctor

Call your prescriber the same day if:

  • You have vomited more than once in 24 hours, or cannot keep liquids down
  • Severe belly pain that will not go away, with or without vomiting, sometimes spreading to your back
  • Pain in the upper right belly, fever, or yellow skin or eyes
  • Ringing or buzzing in your ears after Pepto-Bismol
  • A fast, pounding or irregular heartbeat, or blurred vision, after Dramamine or Bonine
  • Black or bloody stools, or you feel faint when you stand

A pharmacy box can take the edge off a bad evening. Nausea that needs one every day needs a new plan.

Questions people also ask

Can I take Dramamine with Ozempic or Wegovy?

Usually yes, for an occasional bad day, if you are under 65 and do not have glaucoma, an enlarged prostate or asthma. No GLP-1 label lists dimenhydrinate as an interaction. It is a motion-sickness medicine, so it may not help much with stomach-driven nausea, and it causes drowsiness. Avoid alcohol and driving until you know how it affects you.

Is Bonine or Dramamine Less Drowsy better for GLP-1 nausea?

Both contain meclizine, a once-a-day motion-sickness medicine that works best taken before symptoms start. It is marketed as the less drowsy choice, but MedlinePlus still lists drowsiness, tiredness and dry mouth, and says adults over 65 should not usually take it. There are no trials of meclizine for GLP-1 nausea, so treat it as an occasional backup, not a routine.

Can I take Pepto-Bismol with Mounjaro or Zepbound?

Often yes, for an occasional upset stomach, heartburn or loose stools. No GLP-1 label lists bismuth subsalicylate as an interaction. Ask your doctor first if you are allergic to aspirin, take a blood thinner or daily aspirin, take medicine for diabetes or gout, or have had an ulcer, bleeding problem or kidney disease. Stop it if your ears ring.

What can I take for nausea on the Wegovy pill?

The same options apply, with one timing rule: take the Wegovy tablet first with up to 4 ounces of water and wait at least 30 minutes before any other pill, food or drink. After that, an occasional pharmacy option is usually fine if none of the cautions apply. If nausea lasts most days, tell your prescriber rather than adding more boxes.

When is GLP-1 nausea too much to treat at home?

When you cannot keep liquids down, vomit more than once in a day, feel faint when you stand, or have severe belly pain. Those are same-day calls, not pharmacy problems, because dehydration on a GLP-1 can strain the kidneys. See the signs of dehydration on a GLP-1 for the full checklist.
