Definition
An osmotic laxative holds water in the bowel so stool stays softer and easier to pass. Examples are polyethylene glycol (MiraLAX) and magnesium products. Polyethylene glycol usually takes days, not hours, to work.
MedlinePlus describes polyethylene glycol 3350 as an osmotic laxative that works by causing water to be retained with the stool, which softens it and increases the number of bowel movements. It is usually taken once a day as needed for up to 2 weeks, and may take 2 to 4 days to work. The NIDDK lists osmotic agents such as Milk of Magnesia and MiraLAX among the over-the-counter options your care team may suggest for a short time. Magnesium salts pull water into the bowel the same way, but people with kidney problems should ask a doctor first because magnesium can build up.
Constipation is one of the most common GLP-1 side effects: the Wegovy label reports it in 24% of adults on 2.4 mg vs 11% on placebo. The labels also list reports of bowel blockage after approval, so no stool and no gas with vomiting, a swollen belly or severe pain is a same-day call, not a laxative problem.
At GLP-1 SOS we put 250 mg of magnesium (citrate and oxide) into GLP-1 SOS Daily Gut Relief, 2 capsules with dinner, as a daily amount designed to support regular bowel movements, with no stimulant laxatives.* It is daily support, not a rescue dose.
*GLP-1 SOS Daily Gut Relief supports regular bowel movements and digestive comfort. These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.
